In A Nutshell

Grandparents' 50th Wedding Anniversary Dinner

As I've told most of you, my grandparents celebrated their golden anniversary at Armada Hotel last Saturday! It resembles a wedding...firstly because there is sharksfin soup.. and there's the chinese dinner thing, the "main table", guest book, bla bla...

The day started of with all the women in the Lai family, doing their hair at Urbane, a salon in SS14 for the bignight as early as 10am in the morning. (the dinner doesn't start till 7.30..but 6.30 was the cocktail already). First to get her hairdone was my Godma/Aunty Susie .. she had it done up in a bun with the sticky outy bits and sprayed with half a bottle of glitter, lovely. Second was my cousin Shevie who ended up looking abit like those young taiwanese pop stars...(picture long bits of fringe, hair plaited really tightly on the top).. and she looked really pretty without her glasses on! I did her makeup! Her mum(aunt susie) was sooo happy with the outcome! *swells with pride*

Next was my grandmother who had her hair blown to puff up ..and you know what the hairdresser did? She sprayed a STAR design on to the side of my grandmother's head! My grandmother has red hair.. and the hairdresser said, "oh! it's a golden star..suits your anniversary wat!" ... she too had her fairshare of glitter..all of us had. Then my other Aunt, Aunt Judy/Aunty from UK had hers done up, but since she has curly short hair, there's not much that can be done, except give it a trim and then spray some glitter. The lady put some gel/hair glue on bits of her fringe, and you know what she used?? Stationary silver glitter to create wavy shiny bits on her fringe.

My mother was going to do a chinese opera with her sister that night and she needed to wear the head gear for it..so she didn't do much with her hair except plait abit on the side and blow dry... after that she too did not escape from the strange hair dresser, the hair dresser spray painted a harry potter lighting bolt just above my mum's ears, a combination of white, red, and orange. (?).. Then my mum left me there while she went to buy lunch.

I myself had something similiar to my cousin sisters. But she used SO much of that stationary glitter on my hair. I don't know whether to be angry or not that they were using stationary glitter. And the amount of pins on my hair? Too many.

It was so sad when my mum came back from the shops, her hair was all messed up and drenched, because it started to pour.. my poor mother had to go home and comb it out and blow it dry herself..:(

Anyway, this time I used eyeliner and mascara(still cannot.. must buy false eyelashes already)

By 4pm, the "bride" was already waiting in the hotelroom for us to bring her clothes and my aunty Susie and me to do her make up. Downstairs my dad and the rest were rehearsing the performances. Soon after, Shevie and I proceeded downstairs to join the rehearsal. Our performance was the indication of the presence of the bride and bride groom. We were to stand by the doors and sing "ave maria" as they walk in. It was a great feeling, holding wireless mics and all! My Aunty Judy and Uncle Terry pretended to be the couple so we could practice better. Uncle Terry kept pretending to walk at 90 degrees, imitating my grandfather who has got a backproblem(hunched), and we kept laughing our heads off!

By 6.30pm, guests were filling in, as it was the cocktail session, and when some of the older aunties saw me, they were like, "aik, ee kor sam po ngo mei kin kor geh?"(aiks, this daughter in law i've not met).. .. to feel happy or to feel sad? It could mean i look nice and sophisticated , or just plain ol-middle age. then it was, "HAH...? Arthur ge lui ar??!!!" (What?! Arthur's daughter?) ... same ol' same ol'. I was put at the registration table for awhile to collect angpows and get the guests to sign the guestbook!

The dinner then started when my brother and Aunty Adelein(dad's cousin in law) who went up to get the 'anniversary couple' down and Shevie and I started to sing Ave Maria as mervyn and my cousin Derek opened the doors. Dad was playing the guitar, Uncle Alex(Shev's dad) was playing the other guitar..mum was at the piano, Aunty Susie and Aunty Judy were the backup singers..:D Uncle Terry, camera man!

The sound system was great, all thanks to Dad's friend, Uncle Caleb who used to work with my dad when my dad ran Biovision(an ad company and event managing company that have customers that seldom pay on time-which is why my dad left).

Joy!! I had two bowls of Sharksfin soup.. absolutely absolutely ... MAGNIFICOOOZ!!

Dad was the emcee for the whole event.. occasionally throwing in a trademark naughty joke!

There was karaoke and all, mostly dedicated to the 'anniversary couple':)

My Aunties, Cheryl and Coreen.. well, their actually 18 and 21 respectively... yes, and their my aunty, they've got a younger sister, aged 8.. ALSO my Aunty. Obviously. Well they sang "My Heart Will Go On" on the karaoke system..honestly! Not bad! Very power!

My mum performed the chinese opera with my Aunty from malacca(her sister)..and everyone kept saying, "Wah! Yan(mum's name), lei ge seng hou Kiu ar!" (wah! Yan! Your voice is very ..i don't know what's the word in english... but something like ..OH yea. MANJA.) Aahahaha.

After that my Aunty Judy (oldest in the family) gave a speech about how the whole family came about... it's very nice, she made it into a story. When it came to me, she said, "..and Jolene, the first one to go to University, and our first Doctor!".. and EVERYONE after that kept asking me which University am I in, how many more years do I have till I become a doctor... ARGH. It's so embarassing as I haven't even made up my mind yet!! And then she talked about how our grandparents raised them up... about how at the age of 40 or so, my granddad was stricken with TB and a part of his spinal cord started to rot(which is why he has a hunchedback, those of you who have seen him but has been too polite to ask), and he lost his ability to hold a proper job..and the breadwinner role went onto my grandmother... how he lost his self esteem.. but how he still stayed at home and cared for the family(heck, he cooks dinner for us almost every week, and spend hours in his garden, still drives us to tuitions, and can still complain about the Malaysian Government)... and then my Aunty went on about how grateful was she for her upbringing and all.

Apparently MY grandfather was dabbing at his eyes.. and there were quite a bit of wet eyes around the room.. But none of us on stage(the entire family) was quite sad coz we've heard this speech countless of times and were too busy worrying about my mother who was still up in the hotel room, pooping/removing her costume/peeing/make-uping, when she was supposed to be with us on stage .. and play the clavinova. Then after the speech, dad played the intro of "You raise me up" on the guitar and the whole family sang "You Raise Me Up" .. the men, they never bothered to practice constantly, ..lol..so they just went along humming.

Right after the last course, it was time for dancing!! Woohoo! Was dragged out by Cousin Derek at first..ahaha.. and then he proceeded to go dancing with younger blood, my other cousin Shevie..(Derek's a mum's side cousin, Shevie's a dad's side cousin.. so.. Hehehe.. we've(Mervyn and I) been meaning for them to meet up for YEARS(like since they were born?)!! Aunty judy and I danced the cha cha.. it was so much fun.. as I've taken classes earlier this year..:)

My grandmother called everyone the following day to thanked them all..and she reported back to us that 9 out of 10 people said it was very well organized, that they've never been to such a party before... and that it was very nice how the kids celebrated their parents anniversary for them. But the bloody 1 person out of the 10 said, "it's o-k la.. but NOT very well organized.." oh he can just go to hell. He wasn't doing all the work. SO SORRY We cannot have it at YOUR usual hunt, J Fucking W Marriot.

Anyway, will blog about Redang trip, later in the day. Now waiting for Amanda to come to my house.. going to Pyramid to get a few stuff.

Bummer

Just about to head to the showers and come out for a good long session of blogging about the past week..(most of it involves family related activities..which were fun..).. but upon coming home, I logged into the Taylor's webby to see my portal.. and guess what? I have no a's. NO A'S. ... this is soo.. saddening. I'm not going to talk to Su-Chien about this. her lowest is about 60 something. At least I didn't fail anything.

To top it all off I have some disgusting unpacking to do from my Redang trip...and I'm having my tightest t-shirt on and my pair of jeans on at the moment ..and I've just had dinner with my grandparents, aunty and uncle at USJ2.. you can imagine the frustration lah...all stuffed up and oily. I haven't showered(the time is 12.02am)...and my face is a greasepan.. and my fats are blubbing out over the jeans... my boobs sits on fats, and first layer of fats sits on second layer of fats and second layer of fats sits on third layer of fats...*shoots self in the mouth with a gun*.. argh.. I HATE IT when it gets REALLY late and I'm not cleaned..

Wait till I put on my big school shirts and my RM5 shorts and come back here all soaped up and washed..then I'll smile for you. *big grin*... wait, Ow. ya.. now I remember another reason for my lousy mood. The fucking huge ulcer at the corner of my lip which just so happens are siamese twins with the bit of metal on my braces .. imagine the agony. I tried to kill it today with salt I stole from the buffet table at Redang... my whole world spun as I braved the agonizing pain...ohhhh.. sizzle sizzle.. oh yeah, I DID try to soak my mouth with sea water but it was not strong enough. I think the reason for my ulcer is the blimmin' hot sun and the bloody snorkel in my mouth for most of the day. But who's complaining?

I had a great time with my aunty and uncle at Redang! Even if it was only the three of us..! For starters, I had all the coconut water I wanted, swam with fishes for the first time in my life and sat by the shore for hours on end till the sun went down scouring for seashells for my other aunty back home to paste on her homemade cards. Lovely thing to do, collecting seashells. Especially when you have a purpose. Will post a picture of them really soon.

There you go..!

A snail my uncle and I caught by the rocks.. there were like 20 of them in my bottle.. my aunty killed them all.

See? I collected so many seashells..!! and those are Redang waters in there..

Will blog more tomorrow. I'm worried that my fanbase, ahem, will soon die out. Even if it only consists of my best friends and the odd stranger or two.

Bling Bling Rack

Brought my grandma, aunty and uncle to Holiday Villa for a swim. Was quite happy to be able to utilize my new supplementary card.. much to my Dad's dismay. We had lunch there. Basically most of the day I spent driving around in the car..:) That's the life. Mum got my dental appointment date mixed up resulting in me staying at home when I could've arranged for a movie outing with people that afternoon..sigh!

Anyway, it was a really hot day, yesterday. My grandma's sister was there...we met her there. For all the years I've known her, I can't believe I didn't realize how extremely arrogant and boastful she is. Anyway, we know that my grandmother loves adding salt and vinegar to stories that she hear..but TAKE that attitude, and mix it with stories that involve yourself..what do you geT? Yup, my grand aunt when she talks.

To start of with, she told us that she's doing Ricki for a living. Some energy level measuring skill..bla bla bla.. My energy was apparently 18... but not as high as the highest she's seen so far.. 22. Herself. So she uses her palm to detect any concentration of energy on my body as she goes along..and she says that there's a very strong vibration coming from my head...and she said, "look, the vibration is so strong..my hand is red already! you think alot ar?" and I was like, "haha, er, exams just over ma." ..goodness. And she could feel that my aunty is having her period. K. Pelik.

Then we sat down and she started talking about her meditating course in dunnowheredunnowhere and she asked the priest there, why is it that I'm mixing with only boys ar? and the priest is like, "you were a boy in your past life.. so that's why you're more prone to boys." ... then after that she launched into another round of stories of her many boyfriends.... "...just two days ago my friend, he's an old friend, i know his family very well... he is very nice to me..he asked me to marry him and that he will divorce his wife for real"...

Did I not mention that my aunty is 65? Anyway, her husband passed away a decade or so ago.. and so she's been living this solo life though she's got a family but she's apparently very active.. having loads of 'godsons'.

Then I was like, "wah, ur life very interesting hor.."..then she was like, "Yup, it is.. very interesting.."

and then she kept telling us about all the places she visit... how hot the spring water is..and that she was the only one who dared to do the flying fox...and how the bunch of youngsters she was with (the youngsters are people from the age group of 30-40. I feel infantly.) didn't dare climb and how they all kept saying "wah, aunty sim so brave"..

Then my grandmother was in her swimming costume and she's got abit of her belly..i mean she IS 68, what do you expect? Then I was like, "nevermind la mama, everybody also got." and my grand aunty was like, "Aiee, how come I don't have one?"

I tell you...

Oh btw, I just let rip a silent killer and my mum and brother just ran out of the room screaming "AIYAh, HoU chAu Ar!!"(aiYah, So SmeLLy Ar!!)..ho ho ho..!

Continue story, after that, we went back to my grandma's place in USJ..and my grand aunt came in for a visit.. then she asked me, "What star are you?" I was like, "huh?"(I only expect conversations like this from Melody)..then I realized, and said, "Oh, er, capricorn."..then she fished out a book from her bag that read, LEO. Then she said, "Oh, my boyfriend bought this book for me last week... ".... ho-hum. She's more interested in telling me about her lovelife than getting to know me better on an astrological manner. Once again, SHE'S 65!!

Anyway, today Esther and Su-Hsien came in the morning to help me glitterize my shelf. :) We drove out to the hardware store to buy  some clear spray paint and then we went back home to spray paint my shelves (which have not been put together yet.. yes, very DIY).. had quite abit of fun ... :D Su-Hsien and Esther spray painting the planks of blue wood...and me, apparently clapping my hands like a seal(according to Esther) so that the glitter will sprinkle evenly onto the planks..:D Reminds us of Interact Club Days..*sigh*..then we relaxed abit with three episodes of FRIENDS(the one where Rachel finds out that she's pregnant at Monica's wedding) while waiting for the planks to dry before doing the other side. Then Melody and my mum came home and mum bought lunch for all of us. KFC. My favourite!! After that we cleaned up and drove over to Li Peng's.. brought Angel in her cage called "Voyager"..brought her to visit her sister Oreo:) Been meaning to do that for a long time.

Esther glitterizing.

OoOoooooo..

Angel and oreo were like two young children who were so shy at first..then they really got it on like, well, mad dogs. We were quite regretful about the lack of cameras. Sigh. But there's always another day:) Yes, according to Melody's blog..i have to admit it.. I saw Li Peng's hamster, and immediately I thought, "my, this would look lovely around my neck." But it could probably make do for an ear muff only. lol..

After spending nearly an hour and a half there, we drove over to Mel's place (cause her grandma wanted to meet Angel!).. and esther wanted to see Mel's room..tee-hee-hee.. Mel's cousins were there..and I finally met Syl Fynn! For five years Mel have been talking about this cousin of hers non-stop...and finally ..finally I met her. But Mel used to tell me that she's abit plump and all..but when I saw her, I was like, "wow! so pretty!!" mel, not plump at all! Angel was being a right angel at Mel's place... being friendly to her family and exploring the entire house herself without peeing anywhere... good girl! Mel wanted to lend me a pair of Esprit Jeans..but UNFORTUNATELY, I could not fit into it. And it was too big for her, that's why. I feel so sad..

After that we drove to SS15 to return and borrow somemore cds from the TVB Rental Shop..and then we went to buy some Tau Foo Fah and ate in the car.. ah.. pure bliss:) Ask esther, she knows what it feels like. It feels good to take the car out:)

Hi, my name is Jolene and if there is a question in your head, this answer will definitely answer it: I was wrong and irrational. I was being a woman.

Jolene Lai, Jolene Lai,
Came to life in January and not July,
She is 19 years of age,
Can't wait to earn her own wage,
This dental student is home sick,
Will never be in Kedah for more than three weeks.

Subang Jaya is where she's from,
The only place she'll ever call home.
Has a boyfriend, a brother and a dog,
The things she says can give you a shock.

Especially for her father, who always gets a heart attack when he reads this blog.

Hey, rhymes!
