The Singapore Blogosphere Fever

For the past three weeks or so, ever since I did a self-imposed hiatus, I've been suffering like mad rationing my online hours.

In the midst of my examination funk, I've acquired a new addiction. You know how it is, when you're supposed to be studying your ass off, anything seems more interesting than photosynthesis.

I don't know what took me so long to come across the Singapore blogosphere. It has such a large network and I'd be clicking through getting absorbed into the lives of our neighbours from across the causeway.

One thing though, I get influenced VERY easily. Reading Singlish everday, which is a little different from Manglish as Singlish is peppered with loads of "hokkien words", is doing something to my sub-concious vocabulary.

I keep seeing words like Ka Ni Na! Na Beh! Si Beh! KNNCBB. Obviously I know that they are vulgarities but it irks me as I do not understand exactly what it means!
I find myself rolling it around my tongue, trying out the sound.

"Ka nI nah Na Beh." I'd say to myself loudly and bang the table when I realise my careless mistakes in my maths work.

Do take note that I'm a cantonese, and even though I have a Hokkien grandmother, I cannot string a Hokkien sentence together that doesn't offend anyone.

I just find the pronounciations so cute! I've adopted it as my new swear words even though I don't know what it means.
Sometimes I add in Hokkien-sounds to add spice and length to my vulgarities.

Dropped the shower head, "Na Beh Beh Si kwong eh."

I don't know, that just sounds Hokkien.

To express surprise when discovering that my exam answers are wrong, "Si Beh?!"

I don't know, it sounds questioning in Hokkien.

"Beh keong si cho piang eh!" - just random Hokkien sounds popping into my head after hanging around the Singapore blogosphere for too long.

Now, I don't know if these are actual Hokkien words or are they actual genuine curse words that I've acquired as a child from my paternal Hokkien grandmother.

I've been meaning to ask my Hokkien friends what those words mean but can never remember to do so. Unfortunately, I only remembered when I was in Barry's mum's car. Don't think she'd appreciate me speaking like that, though.

So I suppose my self composed Hokkien vulgarities will have to go on for awhile more. Sigh. Ka Ni Nah Bo Si Beh Chi Hor..

One day I will correct myself and swear like a true Hokkien! Cantonese swear words are too old fashioned. Words like TIU and Lei Ah Mah are not fun to say anymore. Besides, they are too strong for a dainty lady like me. I need more casual swear words, words that allow me to curse with less impact.

I'm not implying that the Singaporean bloggers I've come across are all foul-mouthed, but I just enjoy to read the way they light-heartedly throw those Hokkien swear words(that I have not mastered) around.

The Singapore blogosphere is growing at a very high rate. The media has even taken to interviewing the top bloggers such as Xiaxue, mr brown and Mr.Miyagi.(By the way, my comment in one of Xiaxue's entries was actually quoted by the Straits Time! Unfortunately, I'm only known as "An emotionally attached fan".)

They are all fascinating reads that allow me divert my attention from my books for a few minutes each day. With the assistance of the ingenious idea
Tomorrow.sg, the Singapore blogging community is getting closer and tighter. In a way they are also sharing their words with us Malaysians(and the rest of the world too but obviously we can relate better) and they too get their daily dosage of the Malaysian blogosphere when we link each other up. What they have are FUNNY top bloggers that really pulls their community together. I have high hopes for Kenny to take on this position in our own blogosphere. He's got the coconut balls to do so.

However, don't get me wrong as I still love
Project Petaling Street as much as the next Malaysian PPS blogger! I can't wait for the portal's birthday bash which will be on the 23rd of June! I wonder if some of the anonymous bloggers will turn up and will they mind if I start snapping photos? I can always mosaic them out, if they do. :\

In the mean time, I'll be summoning my courage to drive down to KL on that night. But if I do chicken out(though I highly doubt so, need to be brave ok!! I hope I have Sarah in the car with me though..hope she's not working), it'd be nice to know if there are any nice Subang Jaya PPS bloggers who will allow a strange thick skinned fellow PPS blogger like me to tumpang their car down to KL. Hmm.. Jeff Ooi stays in Subang. Hahaha. Shall go send an email to him and see if it's cool.

LOL. I think he'll delete my email right away. "Little girls these days. Tsk, tsk. No shame,".

The Perverted Pest

For the past few nights, I've been very disturbed by the presence of my new roommate.

His name is Ah Kah Chat.

Every night after my shower, I'd open my panties drawer to pick out a clean one. One night, I saw what I thought was a baby cockroach scurrying out of my cupboard and perching on top of the knob of the drawer, flicking his feelers curiously.

My heart thumped as I searched for something to end it's miserable existence with, but it was in vain. I should not procrastinate refilling my tissue box anymore. The baby cockroach disappeared under my cupboard, leaving me high and dry. It was one sleepness night for me. What if the cockroach climbs into my mouth when I sleep at night?

The second night I removed another panties from the drawer and he crawled on the inside of drawer before scurrying away again. I was really freaked out at this point because I thought it looked like a Madagascar hissing cockroach and wanted to cry. It was round and had orange stripes on its body. Too much of Fear Factor, I think.

I was convinced that an entire family of roaches, prefably NOT Madagascar ones, were residing amidst my undies. (Psst, Chien, you should know why. Don't vomit.)

I made a promise to my mother that I will NEVER ever eat in my room ever again. She then agreed to get Rentokil for my cupboard. (Flashback: My brother once popped Rentokil into his mouth back in 1990, and was rushed to the nearest clinic.)

Yesterday, I opened my undies drawer again and there our dear friend was, Ah Kah Chat. Visiting me everynight without fail. I sat there and my mind raced through the many techniques I could use to finish him off that night. MY TISSUE BOX IS STILL EMPTY. I dug around my college bag looking for an old packet of tissue paper while I kept one eye on Ah Kah Chat, who was perched obliviously on my white undies.

Ah-hah! We have tissue!

I approahced Ah Kah Chat with caution and with a swift grab of my palm, I applied pressure to my grasp hoping that Ah Kah Chat can die and go to Kah Chat heaven hell. Three of my panties fell out of my drawer in my brief moment of bravery. I slowly unclenched my fist and peered into the layers of tissue paper, hoping to see the carcass of Ah Kah Chat. Alas, all I saw was cockroach juice smeared on the tissue paper, no cockroach. I flicked each panties cautiously, fearing to have cockroach-contact with my skin.

The stupid Ah Kah Chat(Xiaxue's Cockroach God Bless His Soul) was camouflaged becuase of my parquet floor. BUT HE DIED! YES!!! I don't kill cockroaches very often. A very nice feeling indeed.

Ah Kah Chat and his juice.

Size comparison. I know la it's small, but if it moves, it's scary, NO?

Later that night, when I was busy studying my biology option... I saw this on my biology notes.....

Ah Kah Chat's son seeks revenge. I killed it by flipping it over and colouring it's body with yellow highlighter.

Eheh, ok, time to study again. :) Here're some pics from Hsien's breakfast:

Eureka, I've discovered my camera's timer function. Hohoho, after like what, 3 years?

Mel comes to fetch me in her mum's Mucus Green Proton Saga..she's the one who named the car that ok! I think it's nostalgic because my parents first car was a Mucus Green Proton Saga and I was ferried to my kindergarten in a Mucus Green Proton Saga. Oh, this is the first time Mel's driving me, so that's why must take picture. :P

Phuiyoh, manual sial.

No time to camwhore even. This woman is serious.

Hsien studying..

....her camera receptors stimulated the motor nerves in her neck to swivel around for a camwhoring moment. Ok, too much biology for me. or too little?:D

Decisions decisions..

This is INDEED one rare moment.

Ah, but some of us never miss a camwhoring opportunity.

Exam season.

Hi, my name is Jolene and if there is a question in your head, this answer will definitely answer it: I was wrong and irrational. I was being a woman.

Jolene Lai, Jolene Lai,
Came to life in January and not July,
She is 19 years of age,
Can't wait to earn her own wage,
This dental student is home sick,
Will never be in Kedah for more than three weeks.

Subang Jaya is where she's from,
The only place she'll ever call home.
Has a boyfriend, a brother and a dog,
The things she says can give you a shock.

Especially for her father, who always gets a heart attack when he reads this blog.

Hey, rhymes!
