The Big Prom Issue

So much for going on a hiatus huh? Hahaha. I ought to be shot.

This will be a post.. a few and far in between one. Study to blogging ratio should be damn big okay. No more long ass photoblogs. Pointless for now. Bah. Waste time. Bah.

Seems like almost everybody I ask say that they are not going for prom. The ticket is a little too over the top for a place as mundane as Holiday Villa. Yes, holiday villa. Weddings there are fine, because the splendour belongs to only two people. But prom is meant for EVERYONE and all of us want to feel special on prom night. Sad to say, but Holiday Villa cannot provide the same amount of elegance as somewhere like say, Mandarin Oriental can.

Why do you think we scour the boutiques in town for the prettiest dresses? Fork out more than half our allowances to get professional make up and hair? Hours spent trying on the perfect pair of stilettos? Stressing over the price of accessories?

Because it's one of the only nights we are allowed to dress to the nines. Not everyone have big weddings to go to every other day, not everybody can go to posh clubs to be seen. Prom is one of the only chances to be able to see your friends in things you'll probably never see them in again, unless you end up in the same institution in the next education level.

It's a night for the seniors to remember. It's a night where we take the hands that we were shy to hold to the dance floor and slow dance the night away, akin to the fairy tales Hollywood portray. We all imagine tinsel floating from the ceiling and discoballs in the ballroom where the prom will be held. Kids, we've been watching too much of tv.

I remember clearly prom planning always belonged to the upper hand of the social ladder. Sad to say but my secondary school was very racially divided. Unless you're a school athlete, you don't have many friends of other races. I mean the "sama geng" ones. A bunch of Malay girls(they were the more radical ones) started handing out flyers that had a survey on it. I remember sniggering at the themes. We had Hollywood, Funky.. I can't remember, something like Teenangel or something. The price was crazy. Rm111 for VVIP. What the hell is VVIP? And then Rm88 for normal seats... Okay. I didn't think much of it because of the price. But I knew that I'd end up going somehow.

However, I remember another bunch of chinese girls approached my bunch and asked us to organize prom instead. I do not mean to brag or anything, but we were the ones dominating the Interact and Leo clubs therefore we knew how to handle functions ..well a wee bit better than most of our peers. We were contemplating whether we should or not. But we decided against it as focusing on our SPM was far more important.

Like I said, racism is quite apparent in my old school. Though it's not openly talked about but it's there, lurking among the students who divide into cliques during recess times. So there you have it,a bunch of Malay girls organize prom and there were only three tables full of chinese students at the prom. Oh, and we had it at the Sheraton ballroom.

Racism or not, I wonder why nearly 70% of the faces I saw at prom were unrecognisable. Is it because of the make up? But I realized most of them were friends from outside and the entire place was not fully dominated by SMK Subang Utama students. My group of girls, we were pretty neutral. We never got bitch comments from others because we just never got involved in those my boyfriend-your boyfriend dramas or portray mean girl characteristics. I don't know how many of us, but at least I tried to be nice to all who were nice to me. So I daresay, yeah, we'd have tried to involve more of our fellow students and convince our friends to come for the prom. The organizers did try to form a committee which comprises a member of each, *sigh*, sad to say, clique. I think they managed it, Amanda represented us. But the girl didn't do much accept put her phone number down to be one of the contacts.

Yes, perhaps if they really got a person from each clique to be on the committee it would have been the ideal prom crowd puller. But then again, we were in different cliques in the beginning because we didn't click so much. Our seniors' proms were organized by specific cliques. And we'd laugh at the prom king and prom queen results. They were all of the same gang, and they were all on the organizing committee. Hmm..boggles the mind, doesn't it?

I ended up going for the prom anyway. It was great seeing everyone dressed up. One of the most essential bit about prom is the phototaking session. Nothing beats the photos of your very own prom.

However, it's a pity that the performances lined up the night were of those screaming rock songs type. Kutu rock? Erm, the generation after that. Almost every school function you'll get one of those wannabe Metallica bands belting out something incoherent and so fucking annoying you feel like stuffing the (saliva coated)microphone up their clenched anus.(Why clenched? You scream like that sure must clench your backside ma. Then only got oomph!)

So yeah, there we were sitting prettily in our gowns and handsomely in our coats, we bite daintily into the elegant(or rather so so) dishes served as a boy would yell and scream 'da house dowwnnn...'. Proms are romantic, let there be slow music. Please. Only slow music. You want noise? Head out to Zouk/Atmos/Rush for some some serious head thumping after prom. I like the old fashion American prom.

I had my dance with Chee Kiang. It was not really dancing, just normal hugging and slowly moving to the rhythm. I remember clearly that all around us were couples kissing openly(remember? I told you they are the more radical ones in our school) and I got nervous because EVERYBODY was doing it. Since then we already had some sort of history, I looked up at him and I felt the situation getting too awkward and I immediately looked at the floor, bent down and enquired, "hmmm! Are those confetti or rose petals?" to which he just pulled me up and we continued dancing. That's exactly what he did back in form4 when we were in Genting when a bunch of us were holding hands because it was too cold and suddenly it was just me and him left in the clutch and I felt the awkward situation arise again and saw an object in the middle of the road and ran to it and said, "Hmmm! It's that a slipper?". I was pathetic, I know.

Sorry for digressing, but that's my memory of prom. :) So as I was saying, save for the slow dances, the prom felt more like a rock concert because soon you have those really "rawkin'" performances and you see the dance floor dominated by people in T-SHIRT and Knee-length Cargo pants!! Argh!! The horror. It totally spoiled prom. There I was the whole night, positioning my chiffon shawl around my arms and these buffoons barge in without an ounce of respect for the importance of this event.

As for the A Levels prom, I was prepared to pay whatever amount they ask, but why can't we have it somewhere more elegant? I've smsed the juniors who organized the prom and apparently all final decisions are made by the admin. Another thing is that I discovered that the ticket price for a prom at JW Marriot is about Rm20 less than for Holiday Villa. I understand that only 500 seats are available and their policy on no-outsiders is fairly acceptable. But it's stupid lah, what about the other few residual hundreds of students? As far as I can remember, there are more than 500 students in the January and July intake combined.

Guess I'll be following the crowd and will not be going for prom. Speaking of which, there is a guy in the course who has started a petition to have a clubbing night out at Zouk instead of prom. Well, I'll salute him if he can rent the entire place for us, and if he can fit half of Taylor's College inside Zouk. It totally defeats the point if other patrons are allowed to throng Zouk at the same time. Oh, heard he has gotten over a hundred signatures already. Sigh, some people just love to club too much. But like I said, it'll only be nice if the entire place are filled with A-levels folks and not the public.

Did I mentiom prom is on the DAY the exams end? Usually we need at least one month to prepare for the night. Oh well, too bad some of our collegemates live on the other side of the country. Sigh.

Jumping On The Hiatus Bandwagon

I know my parents will be overjoyed when they read this: I have decided to stop blogging until my exams are over. There'll be the 8th of June 2005. Yeah, take that.

This A2 exam is really no joke. It's the equilavent of STPM..so I cannot sit back and take things easy.

Blogging has always been a place for me to let loose(I am sure that THAT is very obvious) and just share my happier moments with my friends and the rest of the world. Like any other bloggers out there, I am extremely happy when I receive comments to some brain regurgitation of mine.

But blogging really takes up too much of my time and if you say, "Aiyah, 15 minutes only what..". Yeah. 15 minutes. See how crappy the last two posts are? I don't want to feel guilty for spending time in front of the computer when I should be absorbing as much as I can from the mountains of books I have piled up next to me as I type.

I have achieved quite a good momentum in my study progress(semangat sial!) and I don't want to waste any more time. Oh my god, did I just say that?

This will (hopefully) be the longest break I have ever taken from blogging ever since I started exposing myself to the WWW on Nov 2003.

I need to stop blogging because the more I blog, the more comments I get, which is proportional to the amount of times I check to see if I have any comments which is proportional to the amount of hours I DON'T spend on studying which causes an exponential rise in the amount of bad grades obtained.

Due to the exams, I have to cut down on the things I love doing:

1. Chinese shows from 8.30-10.30pm on Astro
2. Blogging
3. Yamcha with friends
4. Shopping with friends
5. Swimming
6. Singing in the bathroom
7. Raiding the fridge
8. Eating dinner in front of the tv from 8-8.30pm.
9. Read the essential blogs (time taken is approximately 15-20 minutes tops).

24 hours in a day. 6 hours for sleep. 7 hours of classes. Half an hour for dinner. 20 minutes online. 13 hours and 50 minutes. Oklah, about 14 hours not studying. That leaves 24-14=10 hours on studying. Laugh? I am forcing myself. So, don't laugh. I managed 3.30-8pm. and then 8.30pm - 12.00am. Ok what? After this I need to study abit of chemistry.

I will miss having my friends telling me that their friends talked about my blog. I will miss making new friends through my blog. I will miss trying to make people laugh at the stupid things I say. I will miss lagging your computers with the amount of photos I put up.

But I suppose this will all be worth it once the exams are over. At least I'll be guilt free.

And let's give my photobucket account a break. The fucking account's been exceeding barely a week after every reset. Problem will be fixed after the 8th of June.

So till then! Wish me luck and hope I have the will power to refrain from this art of time consumption.

Perhaps I will return sometime this one month period if something makes me REALLY angry or REALLY sad or REEEEEALLLLLY funny. (Now a days everything and everybody very serious, because exams coming, so, fat chance. Ha.).

No photos because no outings.

Ok, back to being a full blown nerd. Don't forget me!!! :(

My Aircon Is Menopausing

I've had ENOUGH of that old hag.

Everytime I turn her on she spits freon water(?) at me. I have to hover over my baby laptop to protect my baby from getting short circuited. The stupid bitch then grumbles in a very annoying tone about her woes of the hot weather. Like I want to hear like that.

I wait patiently for her temperature to cool down. Sometimes it takes an hour plus for my aircon to cool the room with her mediocre coolness. I'd be so sweaty that I'd head into the bathroom for a shower and OH, when I come out, I'd find my room a few celcius degrees lower because the old hag is bored decides that it'd be funny to see me shivering in my skin. I would talk to it in cantonese sarcastically and say something like, "Chuen seng le meh?"(Change attitude already meh?). Yes, I actually do.

But you know what?? These days she doesn't even cool down. She keeps churning hot air into my whole room and my room is officially furnace-like.

I cannot study because of the extremely stuffy condition my room is in.

Actually, the blame should go to the STUPID aircon men who came TWICE to "FIX" my aircon yet to no avail. Haiyoh, if that's your job, you should be smart enough to know what's the problem the first time right? They are coming again for the third time tomorrow.

Fuck, my armpits are sweating. *licks*. Ahahaha. Just joking. *takes tissue and daintily wipes, like how a lady should.*

I've brought my books down to study. The only thing that's keeping me sane is the traditional standing fan all malaysian homes have. I seem to get more work done under warmer conditions. Hm. I actually finished one chemistry option paper in one sitting. Due to the fact that the kitchen is only a few steps away, I've been raiding the fridge the entire day and have eaten 27 grapes, 5 longans, 9 mini Lindt chocolates, one and a half bowl of herbal soup, 5 glasses of cold water, 2 sips of pepsi, 1 sip of my brother's Ribena(shh!) and 2 grape mentos.

ARGHH. *plays with flab under chin. and on tummy. and on arms. and on thighs. feels proud of new found (additional)flab in mammary area*

When I feel warm, I drink water. When I drink water, I feel unsatiated. When I feel unsatiated, I become peckish. When I try to suppress my peckishness, I cannot study. When I cannot study, I will do badly in my exams. Therefore I eat. Because at first I felt warm. I feel warm because my beloved aircon is on strike.

Who the fuck is responsible for the strike? The blind aircon repairmen who only came last week.

Hi, my name is Jolene and if there is a question in your head, this answer will definitely answer it: I was wrong and irrational. I was being a woman.

Jolene Lai, Jolene Lai,
Came to life in January and not July,
She is 19 years of age,
Can't wait to earn her own wage,
This dental student is home sick,
Will never be in Kedah for more than three weeks.

Subang Jaya is where she's from,
The only place she'll ever call home.
Has a boyfriend, a brother and a dog,
The things she says can give you a shock.

Especially for her father, who always gets a heart attack when he reads this blog.

Hey, rhymes!
