Cheaper Alternative

So we really ended up in Swensens at Subang Parade last night.

Subang is getting too small these days! Or is it because I've lived in Subang for far too long? We met Krystle and Peini and then Kathleen, Arvind and their church mates and not forgetting Terence(Toh) and his friends. Or perhaps it was Earthquake night. It was great seeing familiar faces all around. :)

What's left of the gang minus a few more gathered for some long awaited ice cream yesterday. As Kay Hong said, "Swensens ice cream not that nice la." I still prefer Baskin Robbins or Haagen Daaz! Those of us who went were Hsien, Chien, Myself, Mun Teng, Amanda, Li Peng,Edison Kwo Kuang, Kay Hong, Nigel, and Barry.

Among the eight of us, we had two giant Earthquakes and the bill only came up to only RM52! How wonderful; RM5 per person:).

Half way through gobbling ice cream, Kay Hong looked up and said, "Jolene you damn suei la,". Guilt immediately washed over me, "Why?!" "You la, go and put up those cemetery pictures in your blog. Damn scary lar!! It's very very bad you know. I immediately closed the browser.".
I thought he was going to blame me about other things...but for the record, there are no other things.

I reasoned, "But it's photography wor...". Chills were running up and down my legs. I know it should be my spine, but I felt it in my legs.
"They say ar..... there are three things that people do which will result in bad karma. Number one is taking photographs of cemeteries. Number two, its belanja-ing people to go find prostitute..."(I forgot number three..). He then continued, "You never know what kind of spirit you disturb leh... 15 year old boy die of cancer, young little girl die..and all that... haiyer...jolene..you know ar, when I saw those photos, I wanted to take out my prayer book and read already you know!!"

It's strange that he is in the same religion as me, Japanese Buddhist(Soka Gakkai), yet he is very superstitious. We were brought up to believe that when people die, their energy merely converts to another form of energy.

Still, I was really freaked out. I mean I don't want to be disturbed by spirits!! Mun Teng was trying to console me, "I'm sure the spirits will be happy that you are using them as a form of art,". But Kay Hong was going on about how I have no respect for the dead. He said he was sure that my own grandfather wouldn't mind taking photos with me, but he said he wasn't quite sure about the others.

He then entertained me with this tip on how to get 4D number. Something like dunking your head in a body of water at the cemetery and then going there with a bag of salt. You'll have to stay there at 12am to 6am and for every extended rotten hand that comes your way, you have to give it the amount of salt it wants. Bargaining over the amount of salt to be given out should not take place. I don't know how it works, but the thought of it is seriously freaky.

It's quite unusual for me to be so scared over things like these, because horror movies have absolutely ZERO effect on me. But suddenly, I'm like a child all over again. Not being able to sleep at night, petrified. KAY HONG IT'S ALL YOUR FAULT..... :( :( :( I honestly never really knew much about taking photos at cemeteries and such. Still, like they all say, better to believe than to not believe. YARGHHHhhhhh!!

On to happier thoughts:

Earthquake with eight flavours. I think the hardest part was choosing the flavours. I ordered yam. Nobody dared to touch my yam. Why does everyone hate my yam?

Kay Hong starting out with the cherry.

Mmmmmmmm...

See my yam? Poor thing all mushed up.

Chien and Hsien

l-r: Kay Hong, Mun Teng, Edison, Li Peng, Myself.

The other half of the table.

And Barry thought we over-ordered.

Thanks, Kwo Kuang.

Nice shot.:)

l-r: Me, Manda, Nigel and Kwo Kuang.

Awww.. HAPPY BIRTHDAY LI PENG!! She turned 19 yesterday. Edison, you still owe her a present. *tut, tut*

Bum fluff.

Kay Hong's bum fluff.

Li Peng and Me.

A nicer one.

Wahhahaha..damn gay lar, Kay Hong. By the way, Barry didn't want to give me a nice pose at any point. Ass. :(

Camwhoring with Mun Teng! It's essential to camwhore when we get together. Yes, I know I have a pimple.

l-r: Amanda, Me, Terence, Mun Teng

After many years of absence in our lives, we finally found him having ice cream with his kawans. Thought we'd show Terence's pet sis, Esther, what kind of a man he's grown into. No more spiky hair!! If you can see, though I doubt it, just below Terence's left ear, in the background, is a guy called Allen Wong. He was a nice Interact senior who made conversation with me when I was in form2 at the Interact Conference when the other seniors were too busy entertaining themselves. We chatted alot online back then and I, hehe, developed a tiny crush on the fella. Yesterday night, he came over to say hello too. Was surprised he could still remember my name. Glad to see all these old acquaintances all grown up after many many years of not seeing each other.

I'm telling you, it's the Earthquake Night. That's why.

Growing Up

Over the weekend I had three yamcha sessions which really cheered me up after the exam season. It's so good to see familiar faces again after being a slave to the books. At least I hope I was being a slave to the books. *looks around innocently*

Saturday morning yam cha session was just the girls: Esther, Mel, Chien, Hsien, Liss, She Dee and Li Peng. These days it's not often we can arrange simple yamcha sessions like these. There are those who have extra classes, piano classes, church duties, parental obligations, boyfriend obligations, laziness, ffk-ness etc etc..oh yeah, and being overseas is also a contributing factor to one's absence.(Abby Heng).

In the afternoon, Dennis dropped by to return my Friends Season 10. We ended up going for a late lunch and a long chat at a coffeeshop in Sunway. Everytime he sees any of us, he'd shake his head and say, "My little bears, all grown up..". He has always been the wise one whom I went to whenever I encountered a problem in my early secondary school days. He was the only one who would entertain me with long responsive emails whenever I asked him questions regarding the boy that I really liked and gave me such thorough advice. These days, I look at 15 year old boys and think, "How did a 15 year old ever managed to give me such sound advice to guide me through such troubled times?" This lasted right up till the beginning of my last year in secondary school, whenever I felt disturbed, I only had to open my hotmail account and spill my heart away and he'd reply and tell me things that I needed to hear and gave me questions to ponder over which eventually helped to settle my problems for me.

Last year, I was in a situation that would no doubt require his expertise in calming me down but I told him, NO, this time I'm going to do it myself. I can't email him everytime and ask him if this path is right or if that path is wrong or if this is too much. His response made me feel as if I really grew up from that little unstable thing I was back in early secondary school. Because he has always been giving me such sound advice, he's always been like a brother who is years older than me. Not just the three years, but years. Korkorbear will be one of the few friends whose wedding will have me eating sharksfin soup at the "old school mates" table and going up on the karaoke machine to embarass myself.

LOL, Dennis, since I never really wrote you a testimonial, guess this should be counted as one!

On Sunday night, Kay Hong and I went to Tanjung and I had another long chat with this fella. Obviously times with Kay Hong only results in a hell lot of insults to your face(for example how when I go out with him people will assume I'm his sister because I look older) and non-stop laughter about the situations that he manages to dig himself into. The shit he gets in always amazes me no less. In a way, it's good that he can laugh about it.

He was telling me that he received three parking tickets last week. He said he prayed to the skies and hoped that it would rain and he left the ticket on the screen. When it was wet enough, he switched his wiper on to tear it into a "hundred pieces". Right.

Half way through our yam cha session, the entire Tanjung faced a blackout. Kay Hong said, "Yay, free makan!" .. sheesh. Don't worry folks, I made sure that the bill was settled. This is the same dude who made a Rafi (mamak in SS15) staff follow him all the way to Club7 to give him a good scolding about how he is never allowed back in Rafi as he doesn't pay. LOL.

Hsien, Chien, Matt Ong(haven't seen this guy in such a long time since I last smeared blusher on him for Hip Hopera!) and I went to Midvalley today to watch Hitch! The show was SO good. So many laugh out loud moments and the guy who played Alfred is really good at his role. Hats off to him. Alex Hitchens astounds me with all his suave moves.
Abby once said to me, "movies are bad for you. It distrupts your sense of realism,". But this show was just too ridiculous to be applied in real life. So alls well.

During Saturday morning's yam cha session, someone suggested we check out this new bar called Luna Bar. Us A-levels folks were pretty enthusiastic about it since we're on holiday and it could be fun! Hsien said that ladies' night is on Tues and Wed and it's free for ladies, whereelse the usual cover charge is RM50.

My eyes nearly fell out of their sockets. It was the small opening where my eyes should be that managed to protect my eyeballs from rolling out onto the floor.

Pray tell, why must we pay half a hundred dollars just to see a beautiful bar? Hsien and I were talking online, half heartedly contemplating on going. It seemed as if only the three of us would be going. I mean, isn't that SO sad? Three girls going to a bar together without a single guy in tow reeks of "HELLO PICK ME UP HELLO PICK ME PICK ME ME SEXY". But we of the innocent minds are only going there to appreciate the view of the city and the beautiful interior design of the bar.

Obviously when we're going for a girl's night out, we'd find an excuse to dress up. I was looking forward to this outing because

1) I get to scrape off the fungus from my lipstick and separate the dust particles from my glitter particles since I haven't touched my make up in more than a month. I haven't been out for SO long.

2) I have not used my hair straightener in more than a month. I haven't been out for SO long.

3) I have not played mix 'n' match with my clothes in a very very loooong while. Because, ah, you've guessed it, I haven't been out for SO long.

Right.

Besides, three girls driving down to an expensive albeit beautiful bar after dinner without an occasion, without guys, doesn't really make any sense.

Hsien has been to Luna before with her church mates and I asked her, "So what's the average price of an alcohol beverage?" She told me that her marguerita cost Rm38.

Once again, thank goodness for the small openings on top of my nose that prevented my eyeballs from falling out.

So I'm to go to Luna Bar and drink water?? Oh wait, I believe the term is SkY JuICe. I won't EVER pay for a drink that costs more than the skirt I was planning to wear. For the record, the skirt was RM30.

Then, I realize, places like this were never really intended for poor college students like me. I told Hsien I only have RM110 to my name and that's all I have. Why would I want to reduce myself to a 2 digit amount doing things I don't usually find myself doing? Besides, there's the Sg.Wang+Times Square shopping trip this Thursday....*trails off*

I don't even OWN a credit card so imagine, this poor college student, digging around in her ratty old handbag(wait, it's still a mini tote bag) looking for RM5 and RM1 notes and ooooh, I think I've got small change, to give to the waiter to pay for my RM38 alcohol beverage.

By now you'd probably have deduced, "Gee, the poor sad fuck. Doesn't go out much, does she?"

CORRECT!!!

Heck, the last "club"/"bar"/"noisy place" I've been to was Voyuer in Bangsar. Yes, they've changed their name to something else for quite a while now and I don't know what it's called, which only goes to show how long I've been away. Besides, I've been told that Voyuer doesn't even count as a club. *hangs head down in shame*. It's really sad actually. Ever since I've turned 18, the only thing I've done that requires you to be 18 and above was watching Constantine.

Now, now don't laugh: But I've never been to Atmosphere, Zouk, Nouvo(I think that's passe already, am I right?), TwelveSI........... actually I should be proud of myself that I can at least name some clubs. Woot!

I've been to Q-bar...please stop laughing...in march last year. I had to bloody pay Rm30 to get in. NO NO NO. I will never PAY good money to get in ANYWHERE that doesn't entertain me at all!

Sure! Dancing is fun and all. But I won't DIE right if I don't go into a club to dance? *starts to dance around the room like the poor sad fuck that I am* I only hope my children will not shun me when they are old enough to question me about the 'oh so happening clubbing lifestyle of the zero's/early millenium'.

On a more serious note, I worry that I may be missing out on an activity that so many people my age are indulging it.

*Smacks head*

DAMNIT. DID I JUST NEARLY SUCCUMB TO PEER PRESSURE?

After balancing the pros and cons with Su-Hsien and a very broke Amanda, we've decided that "YAY!!! Tomorrow night is Earthquake night!". So instead of drinking RM38 bitter liquid, I'd be spending an average of RM6 on classy yet affordable ice-cream at Swensens. Sorry friends, I'll always be the poor college student(and then later on the poor university student) who can not afford to pay for cover charge. I'd appreciate an invite though. But I will politely decline. Yes, don't shoot me.

Cheng Beng In Malacca Photoblog

Formalities aside(the traffic jam rant), here are the photos from my cheng beng visit in Malacca.

Ignore the stoned captions, I am feeling very tired after 2 and a half hours of chinese shows. I have been on a one chinese show per day diet for the past two months, it is not easy to resume the old routine.

The place where they keep my grand dad's urn has a cemetery nearby as well. It's quite a pretty place what with the cemetery's on a hill.

I like this picture. The epitome of serinity.

My Cousin Hong Fei posing with a hell note. He actually wanted to strike a check-presentation pose.

The obligatory big joss stick holder. Erm. I don't know what's the word.

Grandmother arranging granddad's meal for him! He is so much more fortunate compared to my great grandmother who only had lou mai kai to eat.

Family burning joss sticks together.

I like this picture!

Aren't the hell notes colourful? My cousin Yong Yong was telling me about an article he read somewhere about Americans witnessing the cheng beng festival and were so intrigued by our paper offerings that they bought some to bring home as souveniers. LOL.

Granddad's meal.

Some even gets home cooked meals.

Paper offerings.

Myself and my cousin Yong Yong's gf, Pearl.

I thought this looked quite cool. My brother should smile though.

Another view of the cemetery.

Another hell note burner. Whatever. I want to sleep.

Here's my grand dad in his space.

A partial family photo amidst the shelves and shelves containing ashes of deceased people.
l-r: Uncle Pun, Aunty Doreen, Cousin Hong Fei, Aunty Jenny, Cousin Yong Yong and Pearl.

Cousin Hong Weng and I posing for a photo with grand dad. We haven't had our picture taken with grand dad since he passed away back in 2001.

Here lies our great grandmother, great grand father, and Uncle Yew Kuan.

Poor Uncle Yew Kuan passed away at the tender age of 19. He should be in his 50s now actually. This is because he had a rare heart disease and just dropped dead without any warning whilst he was jogging along a river in New Zealand. He was doing his first year in university at that time.

Grand mother and Uncle Pun posing for a photo with the relatives.

Mum posing for one with her great grandmother.

The priest carrying out some rites.

On the side of every shelf, there seems to be a beautiful chinese woman in the company of some symbolical creature.

Tablets of deceased people. Rows and rows and rows and rows...

Thought this picture looked pretty eerie.

On the way back, grandma asked me if I wanted one of the oranges. It was a mandarin orange!! How can I say no?? It was still sweet though.

The waterfall along the main road. Quite pretty eh?

Back home, Aunty Ping prepared a huge meal for us. Everyone tried cutting the damn duck. Here's Cousin Hong Weng trying his luck.

Cousin Yong Yong was just there to pose only, didn't really cut the duck. HAhaha.

Cousin Hong Fei, Cousin Hong Weng and Uncle Pun - they all failed!

Yeah, Kay Hong, that'd be your ass if you don't go for NS and don't pay up your traffic summons. Prison is not a laughing matter; as you laughed at me when I told you that there is a possibility of going to jail.

The spectators!

My Aunty Ping made this jelly cake for desert. One of the layers was made of white chocolate. I didn't try it though. Don't really fancy cakes.

Nah, you can see the layers here.

She made JELLIES too... that Aunty of mine. Haih. So hardworking!

Aquamarine Jellies!

Uncle Pun and his concoction. Bleh, sago pudding on top of the Aquamarine jelly.

........

Since it is not often that the entire family get together, and this is not the entire family as cousin Derek was in KL watching MPO and cousin Jacq is studying in NZ..and cousin Yen Yen is working in the US and dad is currently in Melbourne for business... but it's also VERY seldom we see cousin Hong Weng who's  always busy working(in Taipan, but still!) and obviously Cousin Yong Yong and his gf Pearl who lives in the US.
Actually this partial family photo was Pearl's idea!
top l-r: Mum, Aunty Jenny, Uncle Yew Hee, Grand ma, Aunty Ping, Uncle Pun, Aunty Doreen.
Bottom l-r: Hong Fei, Hong Weng, Pearl, Me, Brother, Yong Yong

Hi, my name is Jolene and if there is a question in your head, this answer will definitely answer it: I was wrong and irrational. I was being a woman.

Jolene Lai, Jolene Lai,
Came to life in January and not July,
She is 19 years of age,
Can't wait to earn her own wage,
This dental student is home sick,
Will never be in Kedah for more than three weeks.

Subang Jaya is where she's from,
The only place she'll ever call home.
Has a boyfriend, a brother and a dog,
The things she says can give you a shock.

Especially for her father, who always gets a heart attack when he reads this blog.

Hey, rhymes!
