Thief-Peddlars Do Exist

My mum had to pay the car's installment in Taipan today and I had to drive around while she was in the bank. Taipan is notorious for it's heavy traffic, especially during rush hour.

After a few rounds, I decided to double park next to the Standard Chartered bank. I turned the radio up and danced to Outkast's Hey Ya whilst reading my latest Marian Keyes novel.

Suddenly, there was a tap on the side of my window!

My heart stopped a beat.

A hand was holding a watch against my side view mirrors. It read 5 minutes to 12.00.(Even though it was 3pm). Did I violate a rule?!

I looked at the owner of the hand holding the watch. He had a typical policeman look. That type of look belonging to scary policemen, that type of government servant that will never go far look. I gave him the once over trying to see if it was auniform that he was wearing.

It was just a polo t-shirt.

His mouths formed a few words whilst he continued to tap on the side of my window. In my freaked out state, I could only catch "Bukakla.. Bukak.."

He shifted his hands and I saw that there were three more watches in the hankerchief that he was holding. They look like those big man watches - Rolex and stuff.

Ahah! Then I knew! He was trying to peddle his wares to me.

I mustered up my most polite smile, looked him in the eye and shook my head slowly.

He continued to point at his watches and showed me how "hardy" the straps were.

I plastered my polite smile to my face once more and held my gaze while shaking my head politely. Then I slowly turned away.

He tapped once more. I didn't look up.

Please don't let him draw out a gun. Please don't let him draw out a gun. Oh please don't let him draw out a gun.

Finally, he left! I looked at him as he walked away. He turned around once and I shifted my gaze away.

My heart was beating so fast, I was so scared!! Don't they know that they are only scaring people by the way they are peddling their wares??

Would you buy something from a criminal?! OBVIOUSLY NOT!

Damn scary lar~! It took quite awhile for my breathing to resume it's normal rate.

Old Nicknames Revealed

I'm taking a break from my studies- I won't whine about how I'm so shit scared about the impending exams and my fears about not being able to finish the syllabus in time even though I really really am.

Because I know quite a number of my classmates and a handful of my fellow A-level mates do drop by often enough to fill up their procrastination time.

When one is procrastinating, one already has enough guilt on one's mind. No need for outside stimulus. So I'm sure you've gotten enough of "shit la haven't study today die die die exam coming die loo" from the other A-levels kids' blogs, which is why, for the past few weeks, if you have noticed, I never attempt to blog about my study progress! It makes me depressed, it makes you depressed.

So I will avoid blogging about studying! No complaints, no rants, no whines!

I will provide you with laid back reading material in your procrastination time everytime you drop by.

**

Alright, back to the topic at hand!

Remember that first identity you used when you were introduced to the Internet back in the late 90s?

I had my first taste of the internet when I was 10 years old and my dad who was one of the earliest Jaring subcribers registered an email address for me at this really COOL PLACE called Hotmail.com. I was very excited about having my own email address.

Why, I still remember the address. jolenelai@hotmail.com. Obsolete, last I checked.
The only joy I got from that email address is using it to send e-greetings from Bluemountain to my AUNTIES AND UNCLES(because none of my friends had email addresses) and it was a pretty orgasmic sensation when I discovered that two of my standard 5 classmates had email addresses too! OH WOW!
Saturday nights were spent emailing Jade Ho and Zachary Tan whilst my Dad the Early Jaring Subscriber supervised.

The only websites I ever visited back in 1997 were www.hotmail.com, www.bluemountain.com, and www.lovecalculator.com
. Yes, many of my visits to lovecalculator.com involved me typing my name and the names of ALL my crushes(when I was young, I'd like any 10/11 year old boy who was taller than me) and get so excited if the results were more than 80%. I'd start fantasizing about whichever-him being my boyfriend.

Then came 1998 and my cousin Jacq was talking to my cousin Hong Weng about this strange thing called ICQ. He kept relating stories back to her about how his friends "can't wait to meet Valentino" and she would ask him "why do you call yourself Baggio?". I was younger than "Valentino" by 3 years and "Baggio" by 7 years. Naturally, the little kid shuts up when adults converse.

I was to spend my September holidays after the UPSR examinations with my cousins in Malacca. There was internet connection at my Aunty Ping's place then. My cousins logged into their ICQ accounts and I was in so much awe seeing them typing away at lighting speed whenever they replied their friends' messages. They all had such COOL sounding nicknames. (Why, nicknames belonging to 1998's 14 year olds and 18 year olds). Everytime that "uh-oh" midi played whenever someone's message came in, I would be anticipating their reply even though they were never conversing with me.

I was blown away with this instant messaging concept!

Somehow, I gathered up enough courage to ask my cousins to make an account for me.

I called myself CrYsTaL. I thought I was fly just because I could type in caps and small caps and caps and small caps.

Oh joy, then I discovered the beauty of Character map. Let's not even go there.

I was so desperate for ICQ friends I even used random chat and nearly fell off my chair with excitement when I saw that some were from KL, Malaysia. MALAYSIA!! WOW!! THAT'S MY COUNTRY!! click, click!

These days I find it so tedious to add another name to my MSN list because I'll have to delete a couple of strangers before I can add another.

I was a typical teeny bopper. Not ashamed of the fact. "OMIGOD, A NEW BOYBAND. I DON'T KNOW THEM AND DON'T KNOW WHAT THEY SING, BUT I LOVE THEM. TOO."

So as you would, I had teeny bopperish nicknames.

1999:

I was called STREETWEAR GAL. Decorated with those annoying symbols from Character Map.

Why? You guessed it. I was in love with the brand Revlon: Streetwear. I even contemplated calling myself Nike Gal. Because I *thought* I should love Nike, since everyone did too.

2000:
I started to have abit of my own identity. I was getting inspired by all things mystical and girly and sparkly and shiny and pretty. (still am, I'm afraid.)
I was called Glitz. Because it sounded like Glitter, but Glitz was COOL.
Then there was Silent Magic. (no idea).
Then came Saint Mystic. (was into the magical idea blablabla)
The year ended with Saint Magical. This brought me right up to the following year.

It was a nice nick. Saint Magical. Really said alot about all the things I like.

2001:

After Saint Magical, came ByeByeDoggie. Hohoho. Why Byebyedoggie? Because I HATED(with all my pre-teen angst) the cutesy brand HELLO KITTY. Still hate it though.

That's why I came up with Byebyedoggie. Used to induce so many sympathetic questions from my friends. "Why, your dog died?" "Ran away ar?"

Once when I was into witch craft websites I wanted to come up with an exotic name too. I twisted my name around.

I came up with Enelial. An anagram of my name. JoLENE LAI. ENEL IAL. Hence, Enelial.

I used it as an ICQ nickname from 2002-right up till now.(my ICQ sits somewhere in my C:drive abandoned and intentionally neglected. I hate ICQ. A real eyesore.).

Then in form3, Esther, me, Mun teng and Li Peng played around with our names. We decided it would be really clever if we spelt our initials.
I was Jayellepias(JLPS-Jolene Lai Pei Shan).
Esther was Eepielle(EPL-Esther Phan Liling).
Mun Teng was Eiceeamti(ACMT -April Chin Mun Teng).
Li Peng was Eiceeellepi(ACLP -Alicia Chew Li Peng).

After some evolution, I put together both the nicknames.

Today I have http://jayelleenelial.blogdrive.com.

OH! The pronounciation.. right!

Jayelle - Jay elle
Enelial - Anne-ner-lai-yurl (so shoot me, I was in form2 when I came up with the pronounciation).

It'd be interesting to know how you guys pronounce jayelleenelial.

I prefer Jayelle because it's just me.

I do have a very strange nickname that I am using for my MSN since the middle of 2004.

My MSN nickname at the moment says, "Miss Lai, you have a 2 year old mask on your face. Please pray that the burning sensation doesn't mean that the mask has expired.".
It changes every day. My favourite ones were, "Miss Lai, for fuck's sake, you can't see your toes. Please stop eating.". "Miss Lai, you are sitting on your toilet bowl. Please don't drop inside." etc.

My very own virtual PA. Sometimes when I have nicks like, "Miss Lai, you blog blog blog somemore no need to study ar? Please go study la!" it does help me to refrain from procrastinating for too long a time.

Cheng Beng Photoblog

Funny how everyone had the same idea to "beat the Cheng Beng crowd".

It wasn't as bad as the years before though, the cloud of joss stick smoke did not obscure my vision very much.

Thank you for your concern, great grandmother is still seating peacefully in her urn amongst shelves and shelves of her peers.

Long ass photo entry ahead:

Quite a sight. Chickens in the middle of SS19, Subang Jaya?

First stop: To buy joss sticks!

HAHAHA.. look at those paper offerings that they have. Batik shirts, for god's sake. What, for the Datuks who went to heaven to attend wedding dinners?

Sugar canes are sooo good on a warm day like this.

This is the area where offerings are made.

Like some sort of canteen for the hungry ghosts.

Hehe, my brother was scaring me by telling me about the film "Shutter" that I almost didn't want to take my camera when we were inside the area where they keep the urns. Don't want to be taking a shot of anything unnatural.

Tai tai means great grandmother. Stupid Shutterfly cut off half my 't' indicating the position of my greatgrandmother on the shelves.

Grandma sticking the joss sticks into the ashes.

I wonder what's the speed limit in hell?

Many came bearing fruits and cookies.

Why, rice and chocolates and cakes too!

Damn, we're cheap!
We only bought my grandmother Lou Mai Kai(Glutinous Chicken Rice). Hahaha, last year it was a Tai Pau!(Big Pork Bun).

Sorry Tai Tai, it has been a slow year. :(

Lighting the joss sticks... fire! I like!

Wahahaha. Smoke is getting into my brother's eyes.

Next year I will come in goggles.

Amazing how I found a nice article to read whilst putting the praying materials on the long tables.

My brother is so clumsy. He caused the joss sticks to fall over. My poor Tai Tai. Dahlah only can eat Lou Mai Kai this year, even the 'heong' must fall down.

Hehe, can see my mother's hands rearranging the joss sticks. Look at the pathetic lou mai kai.

All these ice cream men are opportunity seekers! In times of grief: "Oh! Ais krim!! Mari Mari!"

A little gratitude on behalf of the family for the space they provided to my great grand mother for all eternity.

Such pretty colours! No man should give any (living)woman these flowers, ever.

Paper handphones, paper laptops, paper shoes, paper cars, paper money all gets burnt here to be "sent to hell".

Pollution at its best.

The enclosed burning place for hell notes.

I like the way the bottles are bobbing in the ice water.

I felt like sticking my hand in for a good 10 minutes or so.

Another one of those opportunists.

I like this one! See KL Tower in the background?

The graveyard nearby.

After praying, we had to drop by my dad's office for him to complete some work!

We had to drive through the older park of KL to get to my dad's office. I just love these rustic living conditions. I wouldn't mind staying here for a (very very)short period and making it my own place and looking out the rickety windows, appreciating KL by night.

Yes, I'm actually doing homework at my dad's office.

Was snooping around and I saw their hampers to be given out to the staff during the annual dinner. Note ya, this is "First Prize".

This is Sec-irst Prize.

This is Thirst Prize. LOL.

Hi, my name is Jolene and if there is a question in your head, this answer will definitely answer it: I was wrong and irrational. I was being a woman.

Jolene Lai, Jolene Lai,
Came to life in January and not July,
She is 19 years of age,
Can't wait to earn her own wage,
This dental student is home sick,
Will never be in Kedah for more than three weeks.

Subang Jaya is where she's from,
The only place she'll ever call home.
Has a boyfriend, a brother and a dog,
The things she says can give you a shock.

Especially for her father, who always gets a heart attack when he reads this blog.

Hey, rhymes!
