Sepet

Because I didn't want to waste anymore time as the exams are so near, I decided to watch the show by myself as the girls couldn't come with me. I needed to get presents for Mel and Justin too, so might as well.

Decked out in my new baby blue Old Naxy jumper, I made myself comfortable in my allocated seat and didn't feel alone at all.

Then the opening credits came on. A very unique one at that.

Please do not read on if you are one of those who like to be "surprised". If there are more of you like me out there who want to know everything about a show before watching it, then highlight the words below and read on.

The opening credits was presented to us in such a unique way. A long line is drawn forming the names of the cast and crew in its wake. Cute squiggly drawings that doesn't break off from the line decorates it's presentation. An old chinese song plays comically in the background.

The opening scene sees Ah Loong having a light hearted chat with his nonya mother. Very spontaneous speech. He converses in cantonese whilst his mother speaks in malay. Interesting:). The only other nonya family I've seen is Mel's. But it's her grandma who speaks malay in the family and she speaks to her grandma in malay too!
I'll cut to the chase: Orked looks like she comes from a middle class malay family whereelse Ah Loong seems poor. His housing condition shows it all.

Something about the show makes me feel that it's of a different era. Probably because the location they used was Ipoh, what is deemed to be a small town area. When Ah Loong gave Orked his telephone number on a slip of paper, I can't help but wonder, "Why telephone number? Why not e-mail address? They could probably chat on msn first or something." I realized it was nothing that we Klang Valley kids can relate to, something so old school but still beautiful. The story doesn't tell us exactly when they really got it on but it's just the sweet things that they do together that makes you go awwww.

Picture from The Star Online

If that movie was filmed in 2004 and they were waiting for their SPM results, that means the characters took their SPM in 2003, just like me! :D Oooh!!

Picture from The Star Online

That's one from my favourite scene. He asks her,"How long does it take for someone to fall in love?" and she says, "A minute." She asks, "How long did it take you to fall in love with me?" and he says something like, "Less than that." Oh I don't know if those were the exact words, but my tears just cascaded down like a waterfall.

I like the scene where Mak Enom and Pak Atan dances on a full moon night. LOL. So funny. Any scenes with the both of them were great. With Mak Yam in the picture, it got funnier. Especially the Maghrib part. He looked defeated when all the women in the house had their period and couldn't go pray with him. Teeheehee. Another nice scene was one with Ah Keong and Ah Loong talking in the hospital. It was so real, no pretense at all. Haha, and especially the part where he says, "Malay girls in wet sarongs eh.." and reaches into his pants. LOL. Well, I see we're going somewhere eh, Malaysian Censorship Board.*claps hands*.

The touching scenes were like when Ah Loong put his head on his mother's laps and wept into it not knowing what to do. When Orked finally decided to read his letter on the way to the airport and crying as she was halfway through the letter.(yes yes, I was sitting in a puddle of my own tears by then) and of course the last scene.

I think Ng Choo Seong's portrayal as Ah Loong was a genuine one. Every smile and every shy stare. Very refreshing. He will be the man who single handedly brings thick eyebrows and chinese eyes back to fashion. He.is.hot. I like his soft spoken tone. It makes you feel like you're alone with him. Like the world has no one else. Funny at times, down to earth. But oh so solemn. I like. By the way, just as I was typing this, Justin told me something that got me going, "OH YEA!"

Doesn't he looks similiar to Choo Seong?? Hahaha. He said one day the kitchen staff(He works part time for Manhattan Fish Market) was reading the papers and they said, "ehh! ehh! You look like him!" Hahahaha.. Yeah!! The eyebrows and the eyes man. Damn, Justin, just dye your hair la:) hahahaha. But me thinks Choo Seong would have dyed his hair back to it's original colour as he will no longer be in character. Or maybe not?

Justin said he looks sad in this picture. Well he has every right to be; Chooi Chuan was leaving for Melbourne. Since I'm doing connections with celebrities here I may as well throw this in. Chooi Chuan is Michelle Yeoh's niece. Anyway, yeah. So he gave me another picture.

He says he looks happier here! He's first from right. Well, Justin is really 19. Just like Choo Seong's fictional age. Apparently a few people were looking at him curiously when he walked out of the cinema.

Sharifah Amani, I expected her to be somewhat demure and timid. The shy blushing lass. Oh, but no! She was so cheeky and basically said whatever that was on her mind. I especially loved the part where she was scolding Lin's boyfriend. Great crying skills and (sometimes)good cantonese intonations. I didn't know she was Aleya's sister!(the girl who hosted Malaysian Idol). Funny girl.

When the credits started to roll, I wondered, who was that on the phone? Was it a flashback? According to some interviews with Yasmin Ahmad, apparently, at that point, the movie belongs to the audience. It is up to us to decide what happened.
Some guy sitting behind me said, "Boleh jadi Spielberg la dia tu".

When I gathered my things and started to leave, I saw Alan Yun's name as Ah Loong's brother. Wha? The guy's like "Malaysia's Top Model"(or so says the search engines) and he only got two lines of dialogue? Ahaha. Poor thing. He looked so boring in the show when in actual fact he's this yummy candy of a man. He's the guy who was in the Pepsi Ad(the one where he dashes out in the rain?) back in 2000.

Oh right. As I was coming out of the toilet after I went in to cry somemore, guess who was walking out of the men's at the very moment I walked out of the ladies'? Barry and Suet Li decided to catch the same movie at the same time. Sigh. Hahaha. Oh, malunya. They were like, "Aiyoooo, why never tell us....".. Hahaha. Shame. But anyway it was a good experience and it was really worth it. Don't think I would've cried so much if I wasn't alone. Shy nye. The both of them saw how red my eyes were. To quote Barry, "Dahlah Mata Sepet, cry somemore lagi sepet." Looks like someone got media influenced.

The Earring Monster

While waiting for some photos to load, I guess I'll start by blogging about some stuffs that happened today.:)

First off, bio class today was quite something. LOL. Our teacher felt so shy to linger on "out of our syllabus" issues on Sexual reproduction. Heeheehee. There was this detailed illustration of a man and a woman going at it missionary style. You could see the outline of the bums and everything.(But with detailed drawings of your sexual reproduction structure and all). They did make the clit look a tad bit too erotic. Heeheehee(childish giggle). And before we could put our pens to our paper to copy the diagram(the only diagram I bothered copying. Heeheehee) he swiped it off the projector and he was like, "ahah, censored". Geezuz kristus(a swear word I picked up from Korkorbear Chan when we exchanged novel-esque emails back in 1999-2001), that man is a biology teacher. WE DESERVE THE EDUCATION THAT WE ARE SO DEPRIVED OF.

Heeheehee.

Throughout the entire lesson, he kept referring to the penis as Penn-nass. And we were like, "hm, weird pronounciation." And Barry being Barry wanted to butt in quite a number of times. Eventually he raised his hands and said, "Teacher, it's pronounced as Pe-niss. Not Penn-nass."

It was so pityful. A silent moment flooded the entire class. Poor teacher's face was like a child, befallen. He stammered, "U-h, I-I'm so used to pronouncing it that way. Well anyway, as long as you write it correctly that's all that matters."

There was another time where Barry was being a funny ass when teacher was explaining about the female's reproductive structure. Barry raised his hand and pointed at the diagram, "Teacher, what's a Grafenberg spot?" Teacher just stared at Barry for awhile while the whole class went, "Heeheehee" and teacher cleared his throat and said, "That's not in the syllabus."

LOL.

Honestly, Barry should NEVER sit next to me in class. LOL. Happened during my mid term. We made so many disturbing jokes and we didn't pay attention to the teacher.

When we were learning about contraceptions, Barry asked, "What would you do if you were pregnant? Would you abort it?" Without batting an eyelash, I said, "Yes."
"Are you on the pill then?" he asked. Horrified, I said, "NO!". He said, "Well, it gives better skin and it HELPS lessen period pains*points at text in textbook*". I was like, "Erm, don't I have to be having sex to be taking pills?" Well, apparently not. He said he knew people who took it because of medical conditions. So I told Barry, "Well, in that case when I start having sex I'll call you and tell you I'll be having pills. I'll probably be 45 and call you and say, "Barry, I'm taking the pills now." And you would probably say, "Well, congratulations, you're having sex." And I'll be like, "Yes, that is true."." Hahahaha. It could happen you know!

As we were walking out of class, we came up with a conclusion as to why our teacher pronounced penis that way. We decided that it was because he was so used to his nickname for his lil teacher that he sub-conciously said it to us. Heeheehee. Yes, that must be it!

*

I went to collect my prize from Seventeen in Petaling Jaya today and got Melody to come along with me as I didn't know the way to her old work place. She needed to get her cheque from them too. Small building that, but nevertheless, quite interesting. I even went into the studio to see a Sarah crushing makeup. Coool.

When we headed back to Subang, we decided to go to this cheap shop Mel was raving about. Apparently the accessories there were so damn funky. We spent nearly half an hour there I'd say. Goddamn. Here are the pictures.:) Enjoy. The shop is called MTM and it's in Summit USJ. Took me quite a bit to explain to the Malay sales assistant that by taking pictures of their products I'm actually giving them free publicity and I don't know why.. but when I'm speaking English to someone who doesn't understang English very much, I tend to speak it extra well. It's a bad habit. A strange one. Then I switched to BM and she could understand, but my BM was so rusty I couldn't even understand what I was saying. Damn that B3 for BM SPM. Damndamndamn! At the end she allowed me to roam free with my cameras\. But they were talking about me by the counter, I knew. BUT I'M GIVING YOU FREE PUBLICITY. No, :P, I just want to share these lovely sights with you people. Behold.

OOOH.. And an Old Navy(imitation, I don't know?) thick terry-material jacket(perfect for classes) for only RM13.00! In Baby Blue. *smacks forehead* How much better a deal can this be?!

Last night I was in Subang Parade with my family and I bought these beauties. Been meaning to get around to it. Donations proposed by Amanda, Su-Hsien and Shevie are still welcome! And anyone else for that matter! Stumbled upon a DIY earring website and they suggested using Barbie Dolls shoes as earrings. Intrigued by the idea, I decided to go to Toys 'R' Us and YAY, they do stock only shoes! Unfortunately it's for Kelly, but better than nothing. Only Rm6.90 for a set of 6 shoes. I found the earring hooks in Evergreen(SS14). When I'm free enough I'll get around to do it.

Pretty little shoes in rows of keys.:)

The Storyteller's Struggles

My Sunday afternoon's procrastination has been lengthened for a while more after reading Kar Heng's msn nickname, "Kar Heng says SEPET Is A GREAT LOCAL PRODUCTION!"

Intrigued, I messaged him for the first time in what happens to be at least four years. He told me it was a movie worth watching but the public (even the privated dvds makers) are not so interested just because it is locally produced. He told me he watched the show a month ago as he knows Yasmin, the director who is behind all those beautiful Petronas ads. I was star-strucked(me being me).

I asked a few more questions about Yasmin and her work in advertising. You know, if my career mindset was not science related, I would dive head first into advertising. That creative, creative world. He did something nice for me; he gave me her blog address.

I'll share it with you.

It's like reading a behind the scenes journal! No, she doesn't give a blow by blow account of which angle they took that particular shot from, which small town area they used for their grandma and grandson scene in that cny ad or casting calls for her ads.
It's mostly about her struggles as a film maker in this futureless country in film called Malaysia. Her stand against the Malaysian Censorship board. So it's true; the malaysian censorship board ARE made up of old fogeys-retired government servants.

Heck! One of them old fogeys even fell asleep during her screening of Sepet and woke up with a thud(in her words) when his songkok fell on the floor as he was nodding off. Ugh! How rude!

The Malaysian Censorship Board uses this word "the rakyat" as a reason to back themselves up. What utter bullshit. The Rakyat means The People.

I am one of The People. Are you one of The People? Our identification cards clearly states, "Rakyat Malaysia."

Then why wasn't I involved in the process of the censoring of a film?

A bunch of old government servants are NOT the ideal representation of the Rakyat.

The old chinese man who sells Wan Tan Mee in the chinese coffee shop is one of the people. The senior-ish Indian lawyer in that big law firm is also one of the people. The malay man who works in JPJ is also a Malaysian. The Indian man who sells candy to primary school kids is also a Malaysian. The primary school kid who buys cheap 20 cents chewing gum with tattoo(Do they STILL have that?) is also a Malaysian. The chinese hairdresser who gossips non-stop about her customers is also a Malaysian. The chinese business man who does overtime almost every day is also a Malaysian. The young 20-something kindergarten teacher who wipes 5 year olds' vomits is also a Malaysian. The Iban guy who comes all the way from Sarawak to study in University Malaya is nonetheless a Malaysian. The university graduate who is looking for a job in vain is also a Malaysian.
The national service kids are also Malaysian!

I may be studying UK syllabus and heading off to an Australian university but I am one.hundred.percent Malaysian too!! I too had a Malaysian background; I went to a national school for 10 years.

My point is, they do not involve enough categories of THE PEOPLE in their Saints-filled Censorship board committee.

At the end of the day it is through the media where we Malaysians get most of our information. How will we bloom in our mentality if we are not exposed to different school of thoughts?

A while back I heard someone say, "Malaysia is 15 years behind other developed countries." Though this claim may be irrelevant as the topic was about biotechnology. :) But it could apply, you know.

I've always supported the locally produced films/plays. I like it when it is Malaysian. I am sorry but I never touch the 100% malay ones. That is not because of racism, it is because I cannot relate. Why do I support Kopitiam even though it has pass its prime?(Sorry midnitelily(this nice girl works in Double Vision/Vision New Media)) That's because I can relate to the topics. Why Homecoming? Ok fine, that's because it was on Astro WLT and it had Douglas Lim. But the scenes, they were all so Malaysian! I even go to Actor's Studios Plays because the people that get together there produce something that I can relate to. That's the beauty of it.

Poor Yasmin and her fellow film-maker friends struggled so hard to get Sepet out. Cars were sold and savings were almost emptied. But despite her struggles with the censorship board, she got it into the theatres. Amazing feat if you ask me. She didn't blog about the process of getting it out, would have loved to hear about it though.

To quote someone who watched her movie during the screening, "That is not a Malay film, a chinese film or an indian film. It is a Malaysian film." Why, there was even a woman who came out teary-eyed.

If I love her Petronas ads and when she can make me love an ad on a crappy TV channel(so sue me, I am prejudiced in that sense), then Sepet will definitely do it for me.
Like Kar Heng said, it's only 2 hours of my time. He's right! I can study harder after that. So I'll be supporting Yasmin. Will you?

Hi, my name is Jolene and if there is a question in your head, this answer will definitely answer it: I was wrong and irrational. I was being a woman.

Jolene Lai, Jolene Lai,
Came to life in January and not July,
She is 19 years of age,
Can't wait to earn her own wage,
This dental student is home sick,
Will never be in Kedah for more than three weeks.

Subang Jaya is where she's from,
The only place she'll ever call home.
Has a boyfriend, a brother and a dog,
The things she says can give you a shock.

Especially for her father, who always gets a heart attack when he reads this blog.

Hey, rhymes!
