The Vietnam Trip - Episode Three

I've still got about 300 more Vietnam photos in my shutterfly account. I'm just taking my own sweet time, not like it matters to anyone.

On our second day, we visited the President's home(which is now a tourist spot) which is shit boring so I'm not going to dwell on that. But do look at the few of the nicer shots I managed at that place. Apparently a bomb fell on one of the stairways before.

The view from the President's home.

There are underground tunnels beneathe the building. This is some emergency button thingie to alert the people in the building during the war. So authentic looking right? Looks like something from a themepark ride.

The 'computers' back then. Or are they telegram machines?

My brother going down one of the tunnels. I like this shot, what with the dramatic contour of his body.

I don't like tunnels though, I get claustrophobic.

One of the photographs in the hall.

Next stop we went to this war memorial place. Sorry, I'm very very bad with names because it was all in Vietnamese.

A real tank!

I cannot understand. But I thought it'd make a nice photo.

I love the drawing of the guillotine. So pretty!

There was a photo gallery there about the hardships of the war. It was actually quite saddening to look at them. One thing though, I really admire the photographer who took all these photos.

A plane crashing into a village.

Looks like something out of a movie, doesn't it?

A soldier giving CPR to a fellow military man.

The caption beneath this one was about an anguished American soldier.

A child sits abandoned amidst the tirade of soldiers.

This one was cool because of the way the army guy's legs which constituted as a frame.

Bomb victims.

Scary shit. Some of the beggars in Vietnam looked like this.

Babies who were malformed due to the radiation from the bombs. The twins on the left were born in 1984.

Cleft-lip baby. I've learnt about this in my course. A side of the lips will split up into the nasal cavity.

Another result due to the bombings.

Very sad right.

A beautiful collage of paintings by Vietnamese children in the name of peace.

Some of the actual weapons used during the war.

Dad and his camera.

l-r: Mum, Dad, Brother, Grandmother

We went into a jail replica and on the walls were paintings of the many forms of torture that were executed during the war. This one is for women prisoners. They'd release a snake into their pants as a form of punishment.

I think this one was carried out during the Japanese Occupation in Malaya as well.. they'd put a hose into the prisoner's mouth and fill him with water until his stomach expands.

Self explanatory, no?

Nipple electrocution. Kinky.

A genuine guillotine.

This was actually behind a metal door with only a flap to look into. I stuck my camera in and got this. Freaky shit no?

With flash. They put a fake prisoner in and alot of people shuddered visibly after looking into the flap.

My Parents Now Know That I Have A Boyfriend

I was back again for the weekend for my grandfather's 100 days funeral rites. Whatever that is.

I itchy backside wanted Chee Kiang to fetch me from Pudu instead of my father who usually drives down all the way. I thought it'd make a good impression on my parents that Chee Kiang would come to pick me up since ... they sort of know a thing or two about us all these while, just that I've played the blur card whenever they ask.

But it was raining cats and dogs and when I reached Pudu, he hasn't even passed the LDP highway. So my put-on persona of damsel-in-distress had to be stripped off while I made my way back to Subang Jaya with the considerably reliable LRT and KTM systems.

=) When I reached KTM Subang he was there waiting for me already. He had that worried look on because I lost my KTM ticket(I know, I'm so stupid) and we freaked out together on the phone when he said that I would have to pay a RM50 fine. I only had RM30 to my name. Luckily it was only RM1.60 that I had to pay. Phew.

When we were hanging out for awhile more until about 1.30am, dad called and said, "Wahhh haven't come home. Pak tor until tak sanggup come back ar?"

Then I hit Chee Kiang on his shoulder excitedly and said, "He sort of knows already!!"

Following day, the family and I were at Asia Cafe for lunch, and my father asked again, "Sooo...hold hands already ar?"

Let's all laugh together-gether. Ha. Ha. HaHAHAHHAHAHAHAA. Ha. *rolls eyes*

I was walking past the fermented toufu shop at that moment and had my fingers up my nostrils and I just looked away shyly from my father and gave a shrug.

Then today during the funeral rites, my Aunty Susie/Godma pestered me, "Eh, when are you going to tell your parents laa? It's a phase of life. Everybody goes through it. It's very normal. Why are you so scared to tell them?"

I said, "Haiyoh, paiseh lah!"

So my Aunty Susie and my brother also all itchy backside want my parents to know. We were in Amcorp Mall at one of of the eateries there and they were talking about the usual topic that all middle age women with teens talk about-boyfriends and girlfriends.

"Your mummy should know la, Jo..!" my aunt said.

My mum, still blur, said, "I think she's confused. Right, Jo?"

My brother butted in, "Celebrated one year anniversary liao la!!"

My mum like cannot hear anything like that. Still acting blur.

My father came back to the table and got wind of it all. He thumped his heart with his hands in a samtong(sakit hati/heart pain) motion.

My parents weren't at all surprised and they didn't say much..

In the car back to Subang, my father was telling me about the specs for my new laptop. Then we talked about my transport back from Kedah for the next trip. He said, "Ask your boy boy to fetch you la!"

I nearly vomitted in the car.

"Don't call until so disgusting can or not?" I scolded back.

--

After dropping my brother and my cousin Derek in Sunway Pyramid, they fetched me to the KTM Station. I was finally alone with my parents in the car.

"So...how he ask you to go steady la?" my dad kepo-ed.

"Don't want to tell you," I said.

"How lah? "Can we go steady?" ah, is it like that? So old fashioned ah!" he kepo-ed again.

"You old fashioned lar, ask me until like that.. hahaha." I was damn shy already.

"I think he is a good one. Somemore very smart. Good, Jo!" my dad gave his approval.

YAY!!!! Hahaha.

My mum was like, "You can be interested in each other, but don't get too physical first."

Uerm, o-kaaay. *rolls eyes*

She continued, "Must find someone who loves you and appreciates you."

Wah damn pei man. Hahaha. I was like, "orh." "orh." "orrrhhhh." "Orh." throughout the entire conversation.

Dad gave the last words before I got out of the car, "Remember ar!! In Kedah cannot pak tor, come back only can paktor ar!"

Hahahahahaha. I'm damn happy now that it's all out in the open. :) Immediately, smsed Ck to let him know. As for him, his parents still don't know. His dentist knows though. LOL.

Was having outbursts of smiles throughout the entire commuter ride.

--

It's mandarin orange season again!!! This year no sorethroat, thank god.

The big one eat in Subang, the small one bring back to Kedah because more portable!

When You're Living Away From Home

I'd like to consider that I've been living away from home for more than half a year now. National Service included.

In these...July, August, September, October, November, December, January...7 months, I'm quite amazed that I've lasted so long.

Since I've been living away from home:-

1) I've not ironed any of my clothes since the first month of living away from home. Hee. I just flap it around to ease out the creases. Got a problem with that?

2) I've got holes in the crotch area of my denim shorts that I've been *meaning* to mend. No, they died because of a heavy dosage of detergent-not by any other means, you sick pervert.

3) I've learnt that dust on the floor doesn't kill you.

4) Ants in my food only mean extra protein. Immuned adi.

5) Smell? What smell?

6) Newspapers are really useful. You can cover the carcass of a cockroach with it so that you do not offend your housemates/you can wipe away cockroach juice/you can crunch it into balls and throw at cockroaches...etc.

7) I've been cooking my housemates dinners FOC because they wouldn't let me chip in for their petrol bill. Tit for tat what.

8) I am an Internet addict. This is no joke. And I don't want to be cured. Coz too much of my precious internet time will be wasted when I'm away for counselling.

9) I've used more colour pencils than I've ever did in the past ....10 years.

10) I can actually be quite a bitch. I suppose it happens when you are forced to live with people.

11) I have socks in my trainers that I've not taken out since the 3rd day I was in Kedah. I just sent it to the dobi last week.

12) I've discovered that chinese coffeeshops have big screen projections of chinese serials that I love.

13) Clogged up hair in the manhole is not a good idea.

14) Ridsect Combat is good shit. No cockroaches for two weeks now.

15) Women who live together CAN actually get their periods together. It's true, I read about it somewhere before. And it is happening now.

16) Understood the price and taste of freedom. (lacking of it, not getting more)

17) Realised that if it wasn't for human connections, I'd have died of boredom a long time ago.

18) Bras don't have to be washed that often.

19) My panties are falling apart due to strong detergent.

20) I've learnt how to order cold chinese tea in Hokkien. Sing Ket Teh!

Hi, my name is Jolene and if there is a question in your head, this answer will definitely answer it: I was wrong and irrational. I was being a woman.

Jolene Lai, Jolene Lai,
Came to life in January and not July,
She is 19 years of age,
Can't wait to earn her own wage,
This dental student is home sick,
Will never be in Kedah for more than three weeks.

Subang Jaya is where she's from,
The only place she'll ever call home.
Has a boyfriend, a brother and a dog,
The things she says can give you a shock.

Especially for her father, who always gets a heart attack when he reads this blog.

Hey, rhymes!
