Life Without A Stove

Here in Kedah, Tesco is like the best place to hang out. At the mention of the word Tesco, everybody would crowd around and ask if they can come along.

It is that sad.

But Tesco really gives you everything you need! I got a little creative with the little resources that I have and thought of cooking dinner for the housemates. When Narjit heard about my dinner plans, she laughed at me and said, "EH, that's not cooking lah, just mixing."

Fine. But what's a girl to do when you're not allowed to have a stove in the hostel?
I made maggi mee with a nice concoction of oyster+tomato sauce. Mmm.

We are damn pityful okay? We had to use a metal bowl to put the maggi inside and pour hot water into it and cover it with another plate. I chopped some cabbage and put in as well so that it would get soft(though not properly cooked. ;( )

This is the best part: I would then pour a dollop of oyster sauce and another dollop of tomato sauce. The now (hopefully) soft maggi mee would be put onto the place with the sauce and mixed thoroughly.

The maggi mee can then be served.

Li Shen said that she would have to go out for burger later that night. :(

Step one! Place maggi mee and cabbage in metal bowl!

Step two! Pour hot water!

Step three! Cover with plate!

Step four! Put oyster sauce and tomato sauce onto a clean plate!

Step five! Put mee onto plate and mix well! Looks good right?

Cze-Yin said it was inedible.

Me crying to the God of Cooking.

Alas, I found a fan in Xiong Khee. She wanted a few more plates but there were not enough maggi mee and she said it was no use even if I gave her four more plates because maggi mee is not filling enough.

For dessert, I cut some strawberries into pseudo-cubes and served it with a bowl of sugar to be dipped into. I LOVE STRAWBERRIES WITH SUGAR.

Somehow or other, strawberries make me damn hiau..

..this strawberry camwhoring urge is too irresistable..

.. this is the last one, promise!

Narjit said, "It's okayyy laaaaa.. but cafeteria food is just ABIT better than your cooking."

One more time!

Damn long never camwhore liao, can't blame me for the sudden influx of camwhoring. At least you get to see how the kitchen looks like! There's a good side in everything!

Oyster sauce roCksS!

This is how I mix the maggi mee. Watch and learn, bitch, watch and learn.

Wuan Phing was my assistant for the night.

Fat succulent strawberries. I know Chien will salivate at the sight of these juicy fruits. MMmmm!

Perhaps one of the better desserts I've had in months.

And most of them are right. My cooking sucks. I tasted it myself. :(

giant sotong: u give me money la:) quite expensive one u know.

meldee: we're going for noodle-consumer counselling. it takes time.

william: lol, someday given the chance, i'd like to hear about your NS experience. then maybe u'd like to have a giggle at mine which is chicken shit compared to the ones they give singaporean boys. :) yeah, the bill got quite high this month..so we're seeing how things goes. once again, thanks for the suggestion though..!

Yes, YP is right. Take your Electric stove. At least its skirts around the issue of a normal stove. The electrical bill can be discussed, but ENSURE THAT YOU MAKE YOUR FLATMATES AGREE TO SPILT THE BILL IF THEY WANNA EAT WITH YOU, even before you bring it over.

It is all about compromise and negotiations, although sometimes I use my rank (sergeant) to order my men to do stuff in the SAF, otherwise it will not be done. But here we are equal, so its best to discuss.

But ensure that you hide it properly after usage. I managed to set off the fire alarm in my room while boiling water in my electric kettle.

yuin: Why, Yuin! I'm shocked beyond words that you believe in such things like the GoD oF CooKeRy of all things! *hands on hips*. hahah. ..oh god, that's bad. but when one has no money for proper meals, we go to desperate measures. thanks for the comment about edible maggi mee though.:P

william: yeah, i've thought of getting a rice cooker..... but it's always been such a hassle to bring things on the bus from KL to Kedah. But yeah, thanks for the suggestion:) will give it a shot! .. and all the best to you too in UK. I am currently reading ur latest entry. A very enticing read:)

pingZ; Hahahha i am flattered.

yp: NO SHIT? even soup and tongsui and such? ahha..yeah i have a hotplate back homebut dad's worried that i'll hike up the electricity bill...but as long as the food is for my entire household to share..then they shouldn't be complaining right? i'm thinking about getting an electrical stove. but how to share costs?

Yupz, a rice cooker can do wonders :) Not just cook rice and porridge and maggie... you can do your soup and tong sui in them too..oh ya, you can also steam stuff.. my brother claims to stir fry stuff in his but err... I dunno 'bout that. And how 'bout getting a hotplate? then you can have an electrical stove lor

If your hostel doesnt allow a stove, the option would be to buy a rice cooker and use it to cook the maggi mee. Alternatively if you are very hungry, just open the packet of maggi, pour the seasoning in and mash up the noodles and shake the mixture. Thats what I did in my SAF NS days. And whats more we dont have hot water.

My humble suggestion would be to do a 'everything' mix in a rice cooker. Wash rice, ensure 1/3 rice,2/3 water, chopped onions, potatoes, tomatoes, garlic, cabbage, salt, pepper, soy sauce, chicken, chilli powder and just leave it to cook.

It isnt much nice, but at least its a home cooked meal. Trust me I do that in my hostel.

Cheers girl, take care and all the best for us Freshies, be it in M'sia or in UK.

Hi, my name is Jolene and if there is a question in your head, this answer will definitely answer it: I was wrong and irrational. I was being a woman.

Jolene Lai, Jolene Lai,
Came to life in January and not July,
She is 19 years of age,
Can't wait to earn her own wage,
This dental student is home sick,
Will never be in Kedah for more than three weeks.

Subang Jaya is where she's from,
The only place she'll ever call home.
Has a boyfriend, a brother and a dog,
The things she says can give you a shock.

Especially for her father, who always gets a heart attack when he reads this blog.

Hey, rhymes!
