The Funeral Bug

My grandfather's neighbour from their old house in Section 18, Petaling Jaya passed away this morning. Before any of you offer your condolences to me, I have to say I do not really know who I should offer my condolences to!

This man's name is Grandpa Mike and he and his wife Grandma Helen used to take care of me during the first year of my life. They didn't believe in the sarong method for children to sleep in and only put me on my side on a mattress. Therefore, if you touch the side of my head you'll realize it is uneven. :( Anyway, this lovely couple is portugese and have been our family friends for as long as I can remember. I used to play with their granddaughter Debbie Girl when I was a mere child. That time my grandparents were still living in Section 18, Petaling Jaya. They only shifted to USJ3 in 1992.

Anyway, Grandpa Mike finally succumbed to a long battle with leukaemia. Tonight is his wake. As expected, my grandfather would refuse to have anything to do with sick people/funerals. Grandpa Mike was my grandfather's very very good friend. When Grandpa Mike was so sick, my grandfather didn't visit him. He is very superstitious.

According to my family, my grandfather once went for a friend's funeral and he fell sick the following week and from then on, he stopped going for funerals of any kind altogether. My grandfather didn't even attend my maternal grandfather's funeral back in 2001. I don't understand why he is so "pantang"(Superstitious) about it. My mom ordered a wreath and my grandmother asked for my grandfather's name to be left out. My dad was horrified but my mum said she only followed instructions. Isn't that peculiar?

My main concern is what our friends and relatives who have held funerals for their loved ones would think. I wonder which of us(my family) have actually took the initiative to explain to them about my grandfather's absence. Exactly how do we phrase it into words so that it doesn't sound too ridiculous?

Hope my grandma knows what to say tonight. You know what else is frustrating? It's bad enough that when a woman goes out of the house, she has to crack her head about what to wear. It's even worse to think about what to wear to a funeral. Black. Black black black. The only black thing I can think off is my three quarter top. Sounds decent? From in front yes, but it has a big hole showing off my back at the back. *sigh*. The rest are just too slutty/formal for a funeral. Finally decided on a tight comma top with grey slacks. My mum said it was too happy. Put on a pair of jeans with my old nail artz work shirt. Dad said, "Why the plunging neckline?" My dad offered to lend me something from his cupboard. Horrified, I dug around for something else to where.

End result? A collared shirt with a zip down the front and jeans. Decent enough! But not so decent if you zip it down. :D I have to be respectful though. *zips until collarbone*

Hi, my name is Jolene and if there is a question in your head, this answer will definitely answer it: I was wrong and irrational. I was being a woman.

Jolene Lai, Jolene Lai,
Came to life in January and not July,
She is 19 years of age,
Can't wait to earn her own wage,
This dental student is home sick,
Will never be in Kedah for more than three weeks.

Subang Jaya is where she's from,
The only place she'll ever call home.
Has a boyfriend, a brother and a dog,
The things she says can give you a shock.

Especially for her father, who always gets a heart attack when he reads this blog.

Hey, rhymes!
